How to Grow Moringa

What is Moringa?

Moringa; whose scientific name is Moringa oleifera, or the “miracle tree”  is a plant native to India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. However, it is now widely grown in various parts of the world due its great medicinal properties. It is also called drumstick tree, horseradish tree, and/or ben oil tree. It was discovered in 2000 BC and was immediately received by doctors and their patients due to its medicinal capabilities. Since then it has been a part of Ayurvedic medicine especially because all parts of the plant can be used to make medicine.

How to grow Moringa

The plant is most easily grown in tropical areas but can easily adapt to colder climates once they are protected from frost. They prefer well-drained and loamy soil. The tree can either be grown from either the seeds or a tree cutting.

From seeds

Seeds do not have a dormancy period and may be planted as soon as they mature. Seedlings are also very fragile so they should be planted exactly where you want them to grow.

  • Choose a location with a lot of sunlight.
  • Add a small amount of compost or dung to the hole.
  • Dig a hole 1 foot deep in the soil. Moringa prefers well-drained soil such as sandy soil but can survive in various soil types due to its adaptive nature.
  • Put 3-4 seeds in the hole.
  • Cover and keep the soil moist but not wet. Moringa plants are sensitive to overwatering because they can develop root rot.

From cuttings

Moringa cuttings

  • Cut a branch from another tree about 6 feet long.
  • Dig a 3-foot-deep hole.
  • Place the cutting in, then pack manure or compost in the hole around the cutting.
  • Cover the hole then water.

The trees grow quickly and reach maturity in 6-8 months. The  tree isn’t called the “miracle tree” for nothing! Almost all parts of the tree are edible and have various health benefits so start planting your moringa tree today!
